Hiring Heavy Construction Equipment: Tips, Ideas and Money-Saving Advice

After years in the construction industry, I went on hiatus last year to start my own company doing interior painting. But I decided to take my experience from construction work and start a blog. I hope that if you are hiring construction equipment, my posts provide you with the guidance you need. I love writing and hope that passion shows in these posts. When I'm not writing on this blog, I like to design kites and work on model railroads, and I just started dabbling with watercolours on canvas.

Advice on how to safely operate a forklift during a home construction project

If you are considering a forklift hire for a home construction project and you do not have much experience operating one effectively, there are a number of factors you need to take into consideration. As with any piece of heavy machinery, there are many things that can go wrong and cause great damage to the user, people who are nearby, and the project that you are working on.

It is always advised that you undergo a safety course before you rent out these types of machinery. While some of these tips may seem a bit basic and conservative, a lot of accidents occur when people take these safety guidelines for granted. Here is some advice that you should keep in mind when using a forklift for a home project.

Take all of the necessary safety precautions

Most reputable rental companies of heavy machinery will require the operator to have all of the necessary training, as well as having the appropriate certifications that are specific to the individual area that the machine will be used.

When you are operating the machine, the appropriate safety gear should be worn at all times. This includes thick safety shoes that have good grip, a safety hard hat, protective eyewear and thick gloves that have a good grip. Make sure that your clothing is not loose so it does not get caught up in any moving parts. Before using the machinery, you should conduct a quick inspection of it. Make sure that the brakes, steering and tyres are all in proper order before you begin your work.

Using the forklift

A lot of injuries can occur when the operator does not use the safety handrail and steps that are on the forklift. Instead, they may jump up and down, causing injuries to themselves. Make sure that your seat is well adjusted so you don't have to be straining to reach any of the controls; think of it the same way as you would a car seat. You should always be aware of people who are working or passing nearby the vehicle, and you should stop what you are doing momentarily as they pass by.

Rushing to finish a job can lead to disastrous results. By rushing, you will often make mistakes and cause damage that will take a lot of additional time and money to repair or replace. If there are bad conditions and there is condensation, mud or other substances impairing your vision, make sure that you do not proceed until these have all been completely cleared.
